# Compare

What separates a cloud redaction service, a free browser tool and KeepItLocal Redact, line by line.

Three kinds of tool do this job. No product is named: each column is what is true of that kind of tool.
- Where your document goes
A cloud service: Uploaded to their servers, which is how it works at all
A free browser tool: Stays in the browser
KeepItLocal Redact: Stays in the browser
- Proof of what was redacted
A cloud service: Whatever record the service keeps, on their servers
  A free browser tool: None
KeepItLocal Redact: A signed certificate anyone can check, and a report you can share
- Formats beyond PDF
A cloud service: Varies by product
A free browser tool: Usually PDF and pictures only
KeepItLocal Redact: Scans, photographs, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OpenDocument, email and text
- Teams and roles
A cloud service: On a business plan
A free browser tool: No account, so none
KeepItLocal Redact: Editable roles and per-person grants on the Team plan

What we do not claim:
- Names are suggestions. Nothing is redacted until you accept it, and a name never reaches the record or the certificate on its own.
- A certificate says a file has not changed since it was signed. It cannot say the person covered the right things.
- The prices on the plans are placeholders until they are settled.
